KGMI reported Smith may have tried to sexually assault Buol-Smith before her death.
Cops are awaiting autopsy results before concluding if a sexual assault occurred, according to the Bellingham Herald.
“The defendant admitted to police that he’s been using a lot of meth recently, which is the reason for the voices in his head,” Chief Criminal Deputy Prosecutor Eric Richey said.
In a tweet, Bellingham police noted Smith had a “sexual motivation” for the killing.

Smith’s bail has been set to $1 million.
While Smith was in court Monday to address the charges, a prosecutor said the accused had been treated and released from hospital for acute psychosis related to methamphetamine use just days before the alleged stabbing.
